On this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and their producers Joelle and Danl talk about their potential live tour (and why it won’t be anything like Almost Famous), pickleball, the time that Donald embarrassed Zach in front of Sean Hayes, and how wacky Scrubs has gotten in its fifth season while still bringing genuine heart to the storylines. Donald was afraid he would hate the show once it got this silly, but he’s still “laughing my a** off,” which he’s very thankful for. Plus, Zach’s short stint doing gymnastics in high school, what they would make a Scrubs movie about, and why “duty” will always make Zach laugh.

This episode of Scrubs dives more into Kelso than previous seasons: We learn that Kelso was in the Vietnam War, and “while he was in ‘Nam, they pulled out all his fingernails.” He’s also willing to force an earring into his ear and wear it all day even though it’s bleeding horribly. Mainly, though, it’s about how Kelso copes with his insanely difficult – and sometimes devastating – job. Kelso “puts on a front that, ‘All my troubles are gone once I get out of here,’” Donald says. That’s because he has to make such giant, life-and-death decisions, that “in a way, he couldn’t function if he didn’t find some coping mechanism….but we see in the end that….he’s putting on a facade,” Zach says, calling it “a really beautiful episode” for Ken Jenkins. Donald says he was worried he wouldn’t like the show anymore once it started getting so wacky, but “somehow there are still moments in the show that make you say, ‘Oh s**t, this is still Scrubs.’”

Then Ryan calls in to ask an important question about why Kelso and the Janitor are “wiener cousins” in season eight. Who could possibly have slept with both of those characters? Zach thinks for a moment, then says, “Laverne. It’s gotta be Laverne at one of her aboveground pool parties!” Suddenly, they’ve got a premise for an entire Scrubs movie that takes place at Laverne’s aboveground pool party. Donald says, “The movie’s basically a comedy for 45 minutes and then it’s just straight porn,” but Zach doesn’t think Aloma Wright will go for that. “You wanna make that call?” he laughs. “What if we’re like, ‘Aloma, you’re only in part one?’” Laugh your butt off with this kind of quality conversation on Fake Doctors, Real Friends
