On this episode of I Am All In, Scott Patterson and his producers Amy and Danielle rewatch season one, episode 9 of Gilmore Girls only to discover that Scott’s character, Luke Danes, isn’t even in the show! Scott says he barely noticed because he was too caught up in the story. He’s finally starting to like Dean, and this episode made him like Tristan as well; he praises Chad Michael Murray’s subtle vulnerability and Dean’s chivalry for that. They also try bananas on toast and decide that Lorelai’s mother is borderline abusive for making her eat it. And several fans call in with questions, leading to a quick tutorial on how actors mark their shots and some musing on whether Luke really would have eloped with Lorelai in season 7 if she just hadn’t slept with Christopher. It’s a great day to be a fan of Gilmore Girls.
Scott does not believe that teenagers of Rory’s age would ever fall asleep before midnight, so he understands why Lorelai is suspicious at the end. “Teenagers can be up for three days straight and still be bouncing around. Maybe there’s a gas leak at Miss Patty’s,” he jokes. He thought Paris “was certifiable” in this episode. If she loses her mind this badly about Rory, how’s she going to feel when she goes to Harvard and has to compete with ten thousand Rorys? Scott wonders. Similarly, Tristan has been acting like a jerk and Scott has disliked him so far, but in this episode, he showed that there’s something “sweet and soulful” inside. Scott wonders if “there’s something going on in the background that’s really bad,” causing Tristan to act out. Just like Paris, he’s a privileged, wealthy, good-looking kid who hasn’t ever been told no. If they can’t handle the situations they’re in now, how in the world will they manage when they get to college?
Then there’s Dean and Tristan’s confrontation. This scene made Scott love them both a lot more. Dean stood up for Rory without actually fighting, which Scott admires. And Tristan was ready to be beaten up “because he knew he was in the wrong.” It was his way of showing them that the jerk he acted like all the time was just a facade, and one he didn’t particularly like. He continues this thread with fans Amelia and Heather when they call in, even though Heather might be Team Jess after the reunion special. Then Scott channels his own inner Dean to reenact a scene with Heather, trying a “young voice” that Amy loses no time in telling him, “wasn’t working out for you.” Get your Gilmore Girls fix with this episode of I Am All In.
