Miami Beach Commissioners Try To Crack Down On South Beach Crime

In an effort to crack down on crime in South Beach, there's a push this morning to expand Miami Beach's city prosecution program. Commissioner Steven Meiner is introducing an ordinance requiring the city prosecutor to hear each and every case. This is the 1st reading on the initiative he says will hold criminals accountable for misdemeanor crimes like battery, indecent exposure and discharge of a firearm. A public hearing is also on tap today for the 2nd reading of another crime-reducing intiative forcing club owners to notify police ahead of a promoted event with live music. The commission is also considering a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers.
