Police say flyers were placed on cars with New York license plates in Palm Beach that encouraged “woke” New Yorkers to leave Florida.
The flyers appeared over the weekend and read “if you are one of those ‘woke’ people leave Florida. You will be happier elsewhere, as will we.”
Palm Beach Police Captain Will Rothrock said the department had come to the conclusion that no laws were broken when the flyers were placed on the cars, telling Fox News "we looked into this issue and ultimately determined it was a non-criminal matter. We have no further comment or expected updates on it at this time."
The Palm Beach Post reported the flyers concerned some residents, who said they seemed to show a lack of respect for those with different opinions and could be seen as a threat.
The term woke became popularized by the Black Lives Matters movement after the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “woke” in the political context as meaning “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues, especially issues of racial and social justice.”
However, some use the term as an insult against liberals, saying it means the person is overly sensitive and sees racism where it doesn't exist.
