Three Florida counties are getting federal grants from the Department of Justice to help stop school violence.

Palm Beach County public schools will use the nearly $1 million on evidence-based mental health programs.

"This empowers and provides leadership training for our students to take a more active role."

School District Chief of Equity and Wellness Keith Oswald says school staff will be trained to help students respond to warning signs of violent behavior. 1,900 students in the county will be affected by the grant.

Wednesday's announcement was made at the Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, in an event hosted by Congresswoman Lois Frankel. She said the grant will "prevent school shootings."

The school districts in Hillsborough and Lee Counties are also receiving funding.
