The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly expected to start Justin Fields at quarterback in their Week 1 road matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday (September 8) amid Russell Wilson's calf injury, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported.

Wilson, 35, is listed as questionable and is reportedly expected to be further examined prior to an official decision being made before kickoff Sunday afternoon, according to Rapoport.

"The #Steelers are expected to examine QB Russell Wilson this morning to check out his calf, but as it stands now, it’s more likely Justin Fields starts vs the #Falcons than Wilson, per me and @MikeGarafolo," Rapoport wrote on his X account Sunday morning. "The team is cautious with calf injuries. Wilson is questionable. "

Wilson was officially named as the Steelers' starter in August.

Fields, 25, a Georgia native, was acquired by the Steelers in a trade with the Chicago Bears shortly after Wilson signed as a free agent. The former first-round pick went 10-28 during his first three NFL seasons with the Bears, which included throwing for a career-best 2,562 yards, as well as 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 227 of 370 passing, while also recording 657 yards and four touchdowns on 124 rushing attempts, last season.
