Meyer, Rogers, and Cabrera take on Marlins during Scrimmage

This past Tuesday, the Miami Marlins hosted a scrimmage game at loanDepotPark as they concluded their Spring Training and gear up for the 2024 season.

Miami presented injuries in their pitching staff during Spring Training which created doubts around Braxton Garrett, Eury Perez, and Edward Cabrera. At this moment, the final 26-man roster is still pending to be released but we can advance that both Perez and Cabrera will not be part of the Opening Day roster. Although this is not the news Marlins fans wanted to hear at this point there is some good news pertaining to the rotation.

Eury Perez threw lightly during the Marlins final workout in Jupiter this past Sunday and Edward Cabrera pitched two innings during the scrimmage game and his velocity was as expected, he threw all his pitches but as he mentioned during a post-game interview he decided to stay away from the slider as he felt he did not need it. “The purpose of today was to go out there and feel good with my pitches and arm, I threw two innings and felt good which is important.” Cabrera also added that the team has not communicated to him a plan of action towards the path to getting back on the big-league mound but hopes to throw again in five days and hopefully take it from there.

The Marlins rotation now stands with four lefty starters in Luzardo, Garrett, Weathers and either Puk or Rogers with one lone righty in Max Meyer. Trevor Rogers threw close to 80 pitches during the scrimmage game and although Marlin's hitters got to him, he mentioned “This was more to get the body moving again and keep on my five-day rotation” also added “My body feels good, I am trying to keep it simple my body feels good, and I am in a good spot.”

One of the guys that impressed during the scrimmage and for whom the Marlins are optimistic is prospect Max Meyer who threw five innings and is excited to begin the season in the big-league roster. “Skip [Schumaker] came up to me and he said, you better be ready to go fifth day you got it, I was pretty pumped probably didn't show it too much, but I was pretty excited.” Meyer debuted last season with the Marlins but was optioned to the minors after two starts, six innings and a 7.50 ERA he is looking to turn the emotions felt last season into positives “I feel like I dont think too much when I am out there, it's more just trying to keep that edge and stay hungry, stay energetic so I don't start peeling off all my pitches and just get after it.” concluded Meyer.

It all starts for real this next Thursday, March 28th at loanDepotPark when the Marlins take on the Pittsburgh Pirates with Jesus Luzardo on the mound for the Fish facing Mitch Keller of the Bucks'.
