(Tallahassee, FL) -- Governor Ron DeSantis has named former Tampa State Senator Jay Collins as lieutenant governor.

He replaces former Lt. Governor Jeanette Nuñez, who left to become president of Florida International University in Miami. She was confirmed as the seventh FIU president in June, 2025.

Collins is a combat-wounded veteran who served for more than 20 years as a Green Beret.

DeSantis says this appointment makes Florida the only state where veterans are governor and lieutenant governor.

DeSantis calls Collins an "unapologetic fighter for conservative values and a patriot who has dedicated his life to serving our country."

During Collins' swearing-in ceremony, DeSantis said, "Together we will keep Florida strong and keep delivering results for the people of our state."

Tampa Bay Times says Collins has not ruled out a run for governor in 2026, and his appointment could indicate that DeSantis, who is term-limited, might support that run.

If Collins decides to run for Governor, he will face off against U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, who is endorsed BY President Donald Trump.

And perhaps even the first lady, Casey DeSantis, who has not said publicly if she will run to replace her term-limited husband.
