Starke, FL - A Florida man convicted of raping and killing his neighbor more than two decades ago is scheduled to be executed Tuesday evening at Florida State Prison in Starke.
Norman Mearle Grim Jr., 65, was found guilty of the 1998 murder of Cynthia Campbell and is set to receive a lethal injection at 6 p.m., according to the Florida Department of Corrections.
Campbell was reported missing in 1998, and her body was later recovered near the Pensacola Bay Bridge.
Investigators said she had suffered multiple blunt-force injuries consistent with being struck by a hammer and 11 stab wounds to the chest, seven of which pierced her heart.
Prosecutors said DNA evidence and other physical proof allegedly connected Grim to the killing.
He was convicted of sexual battery and first-degree murder in 2000 and sentenced to death.
Grim’s execution will be Florida’s 15th in 2025, the most in a single year since the state reinstated capital punishment in 1976.
He waived his remaining appeals earlier this month after Governor Ron DeSantis signed a death warrant authorizing the execution.
Florida’s lethal injection procedure uses a combination of three drugs: a sedative, a paralytic agent, and a chemical that stops the heart.
Two additional executions are already scheduled for November.
Florida currently leads the nation in total executions this year, followed by Texas and Alabama.
