Gators Begin Season With Upset Over #7 Utah

The Florida Gators (1-0) upset #7 Utah (0-1) 29-26 in Gainesville on Saturday night.

Anthony Richardson was the star of the show for Florida, passing for 168 yards and running another 106 yards and three touchdowns. After Montrell Johnson Jr. ran in a 14-yard touchdown with 12:48 to go in the fourth quarter, Richardson had perhaps the most remarkable play of the night when he ran in a two-point conversion attempt to make it 22-19.

Utah scored to take a 26-22 lead with 6:26 to go in the game, and again it was Anthony Richardson coming through, as he ran in a one-yard touchdown with 1:25 to go that would prove to be the game winner. With Utah then driving with a last attempt to win the game, Amari Burney intercepted Utah quarterback Cameron Rising to clinch the victory for the Gators.

The win gave Florida their 33rd consecutive victory in home season openers, the longest current streak in the nation. 90,799 fans - the 10th most ever to watch a home Florida football game - rushed the field to celebrate the upset victory.

The Gators return to action on Saturday September 10th when they host #20 Kentucky on September 10th. Kickoff from Gainesville next Saturday is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
